Bourton-on-the-Water, in the Eastern Cotswolds, is one of the most charming and popular villages in the area. Tourists flock there constantly during the summer and indeed during the whole year and, like all popular tourist centres, Bourton-on-the-Water is also somewhat commercialised. The best scenic approach to Bourton-on-the-Water is from The Rissingtons as the approach from Stow-on-the-Wold takes the traveller through modern housing hardly what the tourist would expect from the village. The idyllic charm of this Cotswold village is unforgettable. As the name suggests the village has a river as its focal point, a traditional feature of many Cotswolds villages.
The slow, meandering, wide and shallow River Windrush, flows lazily through the village and is flanked by sizeable green verges and willow trees. Tourists tend to congregate around this area where they usually rest in one of the cafés, tea shops or pubs to admire the scene before them. The children enjoy themselves wading in the river's shallow waters. The river is crossed by means of five low-arched foot-bridges, which add a distinctive feature to the idyllic scene of this village. Two of these bridges are of architectural interest: Narrow Bridge built in 1756 and Payne's Foot-bridge. All these features, together with the warm grey-brown-coloured stone of the typical Cotswold village, create the magic that never fails to fascinate visitors from all parts of the world. |
