Humble Beginnings:

The Blackburn Rovers Football Club is yet another club that dates back to the 19th century. Like so many other teams it, too, was founded in 1875. This club came into being due to the initiative of John Lewis, later to become a noted personality in the sport, and Arthur Constantine. It was these men who organised a meeting at the St Leger Hotel, the direct outcome of which was the foundation of the club and the choice of the colours blue and white. The indefatigable character of John Lewis and his dedication to the sport also led him to contribute to the foundation of the Lancashire FA and become a noted referee and vice president of the FA and Football League. The majority of people at the meeting, which was on 5th November, were ex-pupils of a local Grammar School. These middle class origins of the club distinguished it from the many other clubs founded in this period mainly from working class environments.

The club's first match was played 11th December 1875 but at this time they had no ground of their own. The club later had a series of makeshift grounds, the first being at Oozehead, then they moved to Pleasington Cricket Ground and subsequently to Alexandra Meadows, all in the very brief time-span of three years. Four years later, in 1881, they moved to a new rented ground in Leamington Street. The club's first League game was played here 15th September 1888. However, the club was obliged to move to a more permanent site at Ewood Park in 1890.

The club's rise to fame was relatively swift. Playing against Scottish teams in their early years gave them the necessary experience to improve their performance. Their move to Leamington Street marked the beginning of fame for the club. The 1881-82 season was a great success: the club reached the FA Cup final but unfortunately the trophy eluded them. They had to wait until 1884 to win their first FA Cup. However, since then their fortunes went from strength to strength with further FA Cups in 1885. 1886, 1890 and in 1891. Quite a performance for such a young team! It continued to prosper by becoming League champions in the 1911-12, 1913-14 seasons. It was only in the third decade of the last century that their ability to retain high positions and win important trophies came to an end and in 1936 they knew the bitter taste of relegation to the Second Division.
